"The Church claims an icon is the aftermath of divine incarnation of Christ
and it came into being as a result of this incarnation,
and that is why it lies in the very essence of Christianity
and presents its integral part"
Leonid Uspienski
"To those, who subscribed by mouths, hearts and soul,
Through words, through painting and Icons
To coming of embodied Divine Word:
Eternal Remembrance!"
Synodicon of VII Common Council
"I do not worship matter but its Creator
who turned into matter for me
who accepted life in body and
who committed my salvation
through matter"
St John of Damascus
"The Church tradition is expressed not only by words and deeds and gestures made during a ceremony but by art as
well - through lines and colours of sacred icons. Icon is not merely a religious painting, with a purpose to arouse
specific feelings of an observer - it is just one of the ways of God to reveal himself to us. Through icons an
Orthodox Christian is granted vision of spiritual world. Since the icon is a part of tradition, the icon writers
have not any freedom of depiction nor introduction of any changes according to their inclinations as their art
has to reflect not only their own taste of aesthetics but also comprehension of the Church. Artistic inspiration
is not precluded but it should be manifested within the scope of specified tenets. It is obvious that an iconographer
should be a good artist but what is more important - he should be also a sincere Christian, which lives in the spirit
of Tradition and prepares for his work through confession and Holy Communion."
Bishop Kallistos Ware
